Bike and helmet inspection for increased race safety

Pre-Race Bicycle and Helmet inspections increase race safety and reduce the likelihood of serious head injury and permanent brain damage
Pre-Race Bicycle and Helmet inspections, such as the one shown here at the Infinitive Broadlands Sprint Triathlon packet pick up, increase race safety and reduce the likelihood of serious head injury and permanent brain damage

Having a bicycle inspection the day before a multisport race by knowledgeable bike mechanics is one good way to increase cycling safety. Inspecting helmets not only increases safety, but it allows cyclists with cracked, unsafe and aging helmets to get new, safer head protection. Having forgotten critical equipment myself, I frequently bring extra gear and have loaned helmets to other competitors at National Championships and local races. At the Infinitive Championship Series race in Broadlands, Virginia, Race Director Brian Crow had an excellent crew out to inspect bikes and helmets prior to race day. In addition to the usual packet pick up, and giveaways and a mini expo, Crow had a transition area set up to show “newbie” triathletes how to safely go from sport to sport. First-time athletes and rookies could watch an experienced triathlete and coach go through the paces. All in all, the packet pick up for this race was well thought out and made for a successful, safe race day.
