Illegal U-Turn Enforcement In DC Protects Bikers
traveling in the dedicated bike lane can easily become an unwitting victim.
Authorities say 11 out of 14 bicycle crashes in 2010 and 2011 involved U-turns. In response, last year, Mayor Vincent Gray clarified that making a U-turn across a bike lane is prohibited even if there is not a cyclist present in the lane. Last week, police officers were stationed on Pennsylvania Avenue, handing out informational flyers to educate drivers — and writing citations to those who made illegal turns. The fine is $100.
