Need Your Birth Certificate in Virginia?
Have you ever needed a copy of your birth certificate in a hurry but were unable to drive down to Richmond to the Office of Vital Records to pick it up? Relief is here! Obtaining a copy of this important document has just gotten a bit easier in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Since March 1, 2014, you can now get a copy of your Virginia birth certificate at all 75 Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) customer service centers, and also at all five mobile offices. You can still go to the Office of Vital records to get your copy too. Increased access to birth certificates is made possible through a partnership between DMV and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Division of Vital Records.
To get your birth certificate at a DMV office, you simply need to complete an application, submit the required documentation, and pay the $14 fee. In most cases, you are able to walk out of the DMV office with your certificate in hand.
Starting January 1, 2015, you will also be able to get copies of death, marriage, and divorce records at DMV locations throughout the Commonwealth. Herndon injury and disability lawyer Doug Landau has had a number of cases where a birth certificate was needed. Increasing access to vital public records is important, not only for legal cases, but also for other governmental and insurance benefits.
This is great news for all Virginians!
