Rumpus in Bumpass – Kinetic Multisport Racing fun!
In his first race of the new Kinetic Multisports Series, Doug Landau competed at the “Rumpus in Bumpass” sprint triathlon. The Kinetic Multisports, Rumpus in Bumpass consisted of several events; the Olympic & Sprint Triathlons, Relay & Aquabike on April 12, 2025 at Pleasants Landing Marina at Lake Anna, Virginia. Because of the cold water temperatures, the swim was shortened for the Olympic distance athletes. Because of the choppy conditions, sighting was difficult. And, because of the rain, many athletes stayed in bed! Lawyer Landau could not pass up the race he helped name in the series he sponsors. He got a ride down to Spotsylvania from Colburn Body Concepts coach and friend Rob Colburn. En route, Landau realized that his bike was not charged, so he would not be able to shift gears! Fortunately, his bike was a “fixie” in the granny gear, so he could get up hills, but not get significant speed on the downhills or flats.

Realizing that he would get in the way of other athletes, Landau started in dead last place, with an Underarmour turtleneck under his full length, long sleeved wetsuit. Coach Colburn, who leads the Worldgate Masters swim practices, is an excellent swimmer, so he started near the front of the time-trial start. At Kinetic events, since the COVID pandemic, pairs or small groups of swimmers start together, after self-seeding, so that there is not the “argy bargy” and mass pack of athletes all clamoring for the first buoy. As Colburn has raced in the cold and wet roads of the famous Lake Placid Iron Man Triathlon, he was not daunted by the conditions presented in Spotsylvania.
Because he does not do well in the cold, especially after training blocks over the winter in Florida and South Africa, Landau also wore booties, did his warm up by jogging on dry land, double capped & poured hot water down into his wetsuit right before entering Lake Anna. The 750 meter swim was challenging, a number of athletes did not complete the first leg, and Landau’s hands were numb by the time he got out of the water.

Doing his best to make up time in the transition, Landau wore the underarmor under a windbreaker and mittens on the bike ride! He got passed repeatedly, despite a high RPM for the 20 km cycle course on the wet roads. Hoping off the tri bike with frozen feet and hands, Landau struggled to get his running shoes on his feet. Once underway, he started picking off other competitors on the road, but once participants hit the woods, with the sticky mud and exposed roots, it was all about navigating the course safely. After finishing, Landau knew his time was much slower than in past years. However, he enjoys visiting with other athletes, race crew members and sampling the post race fare, which this year was provided by a family Mexican restaurant. Participants really seemed to enjoy the hot, fresh food after finishing this race. The ABRAMS LANDAU law firm is again a major long time sponsor of the series.
While packing up, and hastening to get into a warm car, Landau and Colburn heard the awards ceremony announcements starting. The excellent, experienced Kinetic Multisports race crew hurried to get results up so that racers could get their awards and head home before they cooled down too much. Both Landau and Colburn ended up on top of the podium, winning their respective age groups! Of course Landau was the only finisher in his age group, but a win is a win! Plus, as the traveling triathlon trial lawyer always says, “the key to winning is picking the right age group!”
Landau is training hard to regain his top end speed. Last year, after only racing in a handful of events in 2023 due to illness and injury, he completed 24 sprint triathlons in 24 weeks. So. with his strength back, he was set on being at the “pointy end” of the races in 2025. After competing in sprint triathlons in California (the Pasadena Rose Bowl and “Race at the Base” in Los Alamitos), as well as the Team Endorphins DUathons in February, Landau is looking forward to competing for the age group series top prize as well as returning for a strong showings at the very short and sharp events at the June 2025 USA Triathlon Multisports National Championship in Omaha, Nebraska.
