Bike “Eye Candy” at National Championships

At the 2026 USAT Multisport national championships in Southhaven Michigan, they were bicycles in all shape sizes, color combinations, and set ups. The one area of a sport of Triathlon that seems to have no creative and or monetary limit is in the Bicycle technology and quest for maximum speed.

In the non-draft races, athletes had to space themselves out, for safety and to make the race truly a “time trial.” That is, each athlete had to get to the finish line using primarily their own power, and not drafting off a large pack of cyclists, or hiding in the middle of a peloton.

Doug Landau toured the Transition area looking at various bike set ups. There were aerodynamic water bottles on the front arrow bars and stem, there were drink systems on other parts of the bicycle, and there were some bikes that had internal tubing, to match the internal cables for the brake brakes and/or gears that the rider would rely upon to get up above over hills, and crushed the downhill.

Some racers at Multisporit Nationals had custom-made paint jobs and modifications that helped them stand out in the crowd

As shown in the pictures in this post, they were a paint jobs that were eye popping, and some athletes spent a lot of money, customizing their rides. There was also a lot of discussion in the transition, racks post race about ceramic, electronic, shifting, solid front, chain rings, larger, derailers, another technology that might squeeze a few more watts out of a ride or his legs, or reduce wind resistance on the blustery course during the week of intense competitions.

While Landau competed every day, having registered for five races, he was glad to see that he did not see any crashes, or significant equipment failures. The ABRAMS LANDAU, our team has represented athletes in bike crashes, as well as product liability case cases involving cycling products.

This racer used an extended derailleur to achieve higher wattage and speeds

In one case, a champion athlete who routinely finishes on the podium, and he has even won several races this year, on  on a ride with his relatively new top of the line carbon deep brim, race wheels. Without any road defect, misuse, or other issue, the front wheel failed, throwing them to the ground and causing a traumatic brain injury.

The bike crash investigation team at Abrams Landau investigated the case, downloaded the Garmin and other tracking data to show not that there was no excessive mileage, misuse, road defects by actually going to the scene and checking for potholes, stones, and other cracks in the road paren, and also the drivers passed cycling history leading up to the crash.

With this evidence in hand, lawyer Landau was able to successfully settle the case or significant amount of money to take care of getting the rider a new bicycle, all of his medical bills paid reimbursement for his time, loss for work, as well as additional monies for his physical pain, inconvenience to his family, future Medical Care, and mental suffering.

Doug Landau;s friend & team mate Jacob Capin, won a National Championship in South Haven, and was also the Olympic Distance National Champ from August when they were in Milwaukee last year.

In fact, Landau races on the same brand of wheels, which tends to suggest that this was just a bad batch, as sometimes happens in the manufacturing process.

If you or someone you care about has been injured as a result of a bicycle crash, a defective sports product, or other result of unsafe conduct on the roads or elsewhere, please email us at front desk at Landau Law Shop or call us at 703–796–9555, is there a strict legal limit limits in all states as to these kinds of cases. Failure to act promptly can lead to the loss of legal rights, or limit the remedies to which the injured victim may be available.

Some racers chose to use solid disc wheels to reduce wind resistance. Others opted for deep rim sets, so that they would not be pummeled by severe side winds (and to save weight), and other participants used more normal” looking wheel sets.
