The Race Committee deserves a lot of credit for putting on such a fun annual charitable event in Northern Virginia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Reston Sprint Triathlon has always been a good early season barometer of fitness for Northern Virginia triathletes. This popular Reston race sells out months in advance. This year over 800- athletes signed up for the \u00bc Mile swim in a 50 meter pool, 12 Mile bike ride (3 laps on the hilly Baron Cameron, Reston Parkway &amp; Weihle Road course) and then 3 Miles of hills running on the secuitous Reston Trail System. The race is actually a very spectator friendly event, with an excellent venue for staging over a thousand racers, volunteers and spectators.<\/p>\n<p>The proceeds from the event are always donated to one of Reston&#8217;s oldest, and Northern Virginia&#8217;s most successful, non-profit organizations, Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith). Cornerstones promotes self-sufficiency through support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other services.<\/p>\n<p>While Herndon injury lawyer Doug Landau has won awards in his prior 3 Reston Sprint Races, he was curious to see how he would fare in his first outdoor triathlon of the year. Lawyer Landau set two personal bests: he broke 8 minutes in the swim despite not participating in any organized Masters swim practices in years and he broke 22 minutes in the run, despite hitting a pothole on the bike that caused his front wheel to go off kilter &amp; rub his frame the last half mile. &#8220;It was like trying to ride thru quicksand,&#8221; noted the Herndon lawyer, &#8220;but I was passing people in the pool, on the roads and then on the trails the entire time, so it was a good day.&#8221; Landau finished 13th overall, in under 65 minutes, and he looks forward to this weekend&#8217;s much longer Virginia Triathlon Series Olympic Distance Race in Jamestown.
