The new Virginia bicycle passing law will hopefully reduce the number of permanent injuries caused by car crashes with cyclists<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Virginia General Assembly passed the <strong>three-foot passing bill<\/strong>, SB97.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SB97 requires drivers to give three feet of space when passing bicyclists.\u00a0 Previously, the law required two feet of passing space.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a victory for bike advocates across the Commonwealth!\u00a0 As we wrote about in February (<a title=\"Another Chance for Bike Safety Laws in Virginia\" href=\"https:\/\/landauinjurylaw.com\/theathleteslawyer\/2014\/02\/25\/another-chance-for-bike-safety-laws-in-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>), the three foot law was one of several bike safety bills being considered by the Virginia legislature.\u00a0 Our local bike advocacy group, Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), along with the Virginia Bicycling Federation, was in strong support of SB97.\u00a0 They actively helped to get the word out in Virginia, an effort which resulted in over 1800 letters being mailed to Virginia legislators from their constituents.\u00a0 Curious how your local delegate voted?\u00a0 WABA has put up the House of Delegate voting record on it website.\u00a0 <a title=\"WABA \" href=\"https:\/\/www.waba.org\/blog\/2014\/03\/virginias-three-foot-passing-bill-is-a-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\">Check it out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Virginia will be the 23rd state to have a three foot passing law, and passage of the law means the Commonwealth now joins its neighbors, Maryland and District of Columbia, in requiring three feet of distance when passing a cyclist.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, a law is not effective without proper enforcement.\u00a0 Virginia bike accident attorney Doug Landau is hopeful that Virginia&#8217;s law enforcement community will take the new law seriously and do everything possible to enforce it.\u00a0 Hopefully there will be some sort of publicity campaign to educate the public about the new law as well.<\/p>\n<p>If you or someone you know has been struck by a vehicle while riding a bike and there are questions as to what laws apply, <a title=\"email front desk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.landaulawshop.com\/contact.asp\" target=\"_blank\">email<\/a> or call <a title=\"landau law shop web site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.landaulawshop.com\" target=\"_blank\">Abrams Landau, Ltd.<\/a> at once (703-796-9555).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Virginia General Assembly passed the three-foot passing bill, SB97.
