Tragedy struck in Ashburn, Virginia earlier this month when a 31 year old woman was killed at the intersection of Waxpool Road and Claiborne Parkway while out for an early morning jog.\u00a0 The jogger was hit by a 61 year old motorist who stopped at the scene and administered CPR while awaiting the arrival of emergency personnel.\u00a0 Unfortunately the driver’s efforts at saving the jogger were to no avail, as she died from her injuries.<\/p>\n

These kinds of accidents weigh heavy on the minds of runners everywhere.\u00a0 A woman interviewed<\/a> at the site of the accident, where a tribute of running sneakers has sprung up, spoke about the difficulty she had grasping that anyone could go out for a quick jog — something that is healthy and good for you — and never come back.\u00a0 Athletes everywhere — runners, cyclists, etc. — are likely to feel that same sense of helplessness.<\/p>\n

The woman killed in Ashburn, like those in so many tragic situations, was the mother of two daughters.\u00a0 An online fundraising campaign has raised considerable monies to go toward the girls’ educations.<\/p>\n
