Extending Capital Bikeshare to the new Reston & Herndon Metro stations is a great idea. Bikeshare programs reduce vehicular traffic, pollution, parking space requirements and improve health and quality of life for area commuters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Capital Bikeshare<\/a> is the Washington area’s bike sharing system.\u00a0 Since its start about three years ago, Capital Bikeshare now has more than 300 stations in DC, Arlington, the city of Alexandria, and Montgomery County.\u00a0 Will the next Bikeshare be in Reston, Virginia?<\/p>\n

Fairfax County is evaluating the feasibility of just such a move as it considers launching a pilot program in Reston.\u00a0 Reston was chosen because it already has some good bike routes and is considered to have the density to support the program.<\/p>\n

A bike sharing program attracts a different type of user than trails like the W&OD that runs right by Reston Town Center (and the Abrams Landau office in downtown Herndon).\u00a0 A bike sharing program is considered an extension of an area’s transit network, and its envisioned usage is primarily to help people travel the last couple miles from a transit center to their final destination.\u00a0 With the new Metro station scheduled to open at Wiehle Avenue later this year, it seems like it could be a good fit for Reston.<\/p>\n

The feasibility study is expected to be completed by late spring.\u00a0 We will be watching as things progress!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
