The running community is a close-knit one.\u00a0 Reactions to the bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon are evidence of the strong bond felt among runners — a bond that connects runners all across the world.<\/p>\n

The running community in Hanover County, Virginia (near Richmond) is no exception.\u00a0 Runner and mother of three Meg Menzies was killed several weeks ago after being struck by a drunk driver while out for a run with her husband.<\/p>\n

The next weekend, more than 90,000 runners pledged to run in her honor, adding their miles to those run by Menzies’ own mother.\u00a0 Even kids from the college in the town where Menzies’ husband works (Randolph-Macon College in Ashland), plus local businesses, got into the action.<\/p>\n

It is a tragedy any time anyone is injured or, even worse, killed due to no fault of his or her own,” says Virginia personal injury lawyer Doug Landau.\u00a0 “Being a runner myself, however, I am particularly struck by events such as this one.\u00a0 The driver of the SUV that hit Ms. Menzies is said to have been under the influence of alcohol.\u00a0 All the more tragic, as this accident was completely preventable.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The outpouring of support from the running community will hopefully serve to not only honor Ms. Menzies, but to heighten awareness in the community of the dangers of drunk driving.<\/p>\n
