motorists to those of the Commonwealth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The League of American Bicyclists has released its 2013 ranking of bicycle friendly states.\u00a0 Virginia comes in at #16, an improvement over 2012&#8217;s 17th place.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Virginia Bike Report Card\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/programs\/bicyclefriendlyamerica\/bicyclefriendlystate\/bfs_report_cards\/bfs2013_reportcard_virginia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to see Virginia&#8217;s Bicycle Report Card, which, among other measures, provides feedback to the Commonwealth for areas in which the state can improve its bike friendliness<\/p>\n<p>According to an article on <a title=\"Patch article\" href=\"https:\/\/centreville.patch.com\/articles\/virginias-bike-friendliness-league-of-american-cyclists-2013-ranking#c\" target=\"_blank\">Patch<\/a> cyclists joined legislators in Richmond earlier this year to push for more bike safety <!--more-->laws in Virginia.\u00a0 Three of the areas of recommended feedback on the Commonwealth&#8217;s report card were proposed by Virginia lawmakers, but none of them were passed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Senate Bill 1060 &#8212; which would have made it illegal for a driver to follow too closely to a cyclist and increased the passing distance to 3 feet from 2 feet &#8212; was defeated in the House of Delegates.<\/li>\n<li>Senate Bill 736 &#8212; which would have required car drivers and passengers to wait to open their doors until a cyclist or other car has passed &#8212; was defeated in the Transportation Committee.<\/li>\n<li>House Bill 1950 &#8212; which would have prohibited the driver of a motor vehicle from following mopeds, bikes and other non-motorized vehicles too closely &#8212; did not get to a final vote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Herndon bicycle accident lawyer Doug Landau is in favor of laws designed to increase the safety of cyclists on the roads in Virginia.\u00a0 A cyclist himself &#8212;
