DC Cyclists gathering for the annual Vasa Ride will be safer thanks to the “No U-Turn” law enacted to reduce biker fatalities in District Bike Lanes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

According to an article in The Washington Post<\/a>, biking in the District of Columbia may be getting a little safer thanks to efforts to increase driver awareness of the perils of making U-turns. Many of us have had “close calls” when cycling in a bike lane, only to be confronted by a car, taxi cab or truck making a U-Turn directly in our paths. Bike lanes run down much of Pennsylvania Avenue.\u00a0 But, when a driver makes a U-turn, a cyclist traveling in the dedicated bike lane can easily become an unwitting victim.<\/p>\n

Authorities say 11 out of 14 bicycle crashes in 2010 and 2011 involved U-turns.\u00a0 In response, last year, Mayor Vincent Gray clarified that making a U-turn across a bike lane is prohibited even if there is not a cyclist present in the lane. Last week, police officers were stationed on Pennsylvania Avenue,\u00a0 handing out informational flyers to educate drivers — and writing citations to those who made illegal turns.\u00a0 The fine is $100.
