Cyclists, Runners, Walkers and Skaters all have stopped at Herndon’s Great Harvest Bread<\/a> for the free slices, the warm, wonderful aromas and Jack Corkey’s smile. He was a “darned good” friend to everyone who used the W&OD Trail and visited Herndon, Virginia. The web site is titled “Darned Good Bread,” a fitting appellation. The bakery was so well known, that we gave directions relative to Jack and Laurie’s shop – “we’re a block West of Great Harvest\u0085”<\/p>\n

Jack Corkey, died suddenly Sunday at the age of 63. He came in from a run, and was found by his wife Laurie. All of us in the Downtown Historic District of Herndon are in shock. I would stop by several times a week, for “provisions,” local talk and advice. Whenever I saw Jack, he always had a smile for me and loved a good laugh. Jack employed lots of kids from local high schools and the Herndon high kids caught his infectious good spirits and welcoming attitude.<\/p>\n

In addition to being a wonderful “ambassador” for the Town of Herndon, Jack, Laurie and the Great Harvest staff served up baked goodies at local sporting events, such as the Reston Triathlon, the annual Herndon Festival road races and the Herndon Turkey Trot. That is why it was such a thrill for me to see the Corkeys at the Turkey Trot this fall – as runners. They were still all smiles in their “civilian clothes,” as Jack retired in March of last year, with Tim, his long-time assistant, taking over the reigns of the shop that is so popular with serious competitors, recreational athletes and even jogging stroller and bugger babies. He volunteered and supplied the healthy post event treats at many Reston and Herndon area events, and even when serving finishers many hours later, he still had a great sense of humor.<\/p>\n

However, many athletes probably don’t realize that Jack and Laurie nurtured others with their personal service, including as contributors and volunteers for Reston Interfaith’s Embry Rucker Community Shelter, Boy and Girl Scout troops, the Fairfax County Council for the Arts, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Giving Circle of Hope and the Elden Street Players. The Corkeys are well-known in Northern Virginia for their work to help the hungry, homeless and ill. Corky opened Great Harvest in 1990, after visiting a similar bakery in Lexington, Kentucky. After being recognized in 2005 with a “Best of Reston” for “Nourishing Our Community,” Corkey remained humble about their mission. “We just do what we do,” he said. “We don’t do it to be honored.”<\/p>\n
