Most air travelers do not realize the many physical requirements of the flight attendant’s position. While the flight safety instructions and beverage service do not seem that difficult, there are other duties that can be difficult to perform after an on the job injury. Lifting heavy bags into the overhead bins and pushing beverage carts in turbulence are just two of the requisite tasks that require full duty abilities. Flight attendants are not glorified “hostesses” or “cocktail waitresses in the air,” but part of the overall safety team of the aircraft.<\/p>\n

If a member of the flight crew is unable to perform critical elements of the safety protocol, airline passengers could be injured and lives could be lost. “The tension in many of these airline workers compensation cases is the requirement to do the essential functions of the job by an employee who does not want to give up his or her career, flight benefits or seniority due to a disabling shoulder, neck, hand or wrist injury,” notes Dulles International<\/a> and Reagan National Airport<\/a> injury lawyer Doug Landau. Virginia law does not require the airlines or airport to offer a disabled employee light duty or part-time work.
