Beautiful race venues, challenging competition, unique prizes, sophisticated computerized results all contribute to the enjoyment I derive from participating in Virginia Triathlon Series events and races produced by Set Up, Inc. However, another aspect that I enjoy is the well trained and affable volunteers. The race volunteers are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and upbeat. The keep the bike course safe, prevent runners from getting lost or hurt, flag drivers to avoid crashes and warn bicycle riders when to slow down and dismount. At the Warrenton Sprint race there were girl scouts handing out water, in Spotsylvania, the “Sliders” girls team was cheering and handing out refreshments, and in Luray, the smiling volunteers braved the damp and cold. If you have the opportunity to volunteer at an upcoming Set Up event, take the opportunity to do so. It is rewarding to volunteer just as it is to compete. Contact Greg Hawkins if you would like to “give back” to the sport and be a volunteer. You’ll get food, shwag and the competitors’ thanks.
