Going 3-for-3 in Virginia Triathlon Series sprint races this season enabled Herndon Reston injury lawyer Doug Landau to work on his speed for the USAT National Championships and qualify for the World Championships. Racing all over Virginia also enabled the Triathlon Trial Lawyer to visit with clients and counsel as well. While no other lawyer we know of does this, Landau makes public his trial and triathlon schedule so that clients, their friends and families can see him “in action” and talk to him in person about what is expected when it comes time for their “day in court.”  Upcoming Races, Cases and Places include:

Giving is what being an effective and empathetic trial lawyer is all about.  If you cannot give of yourself, then you will not be an effective advocate for someone who has no voice.

Herndon injury and disability lawyer Doug Landau sprinting out of the water at the USA National Triathlon Championships in Tuscaloosa Alabama

Herndon injury and disability lawyer Doug Landau sprinting out of the water at the USA National Triathlon Championships in Tuscaloosa Alabama

At this week’s USAT National Championship, Doug Landau again demonstrated that giving is second nature to the third generation lawyer.  On Friday he gave a helmet to a competitor whose helmet was cracked and would therefore be found unsafe at the pre-race inspection.  On Saturday, he spoke to race officials about changing the bike dismount area to reduce the dangers presented to athletes, volunteers and spectators after observing many crashes and near misses.  And today, after qualifying for the World Triathlon Championship on the Olympic race course in Beijing China, Landau gave his Team USA slot to another competitor so that they could go and experience this incredible opportunity.  Landau has competed internationally in Canada, England, Israel, Italy, Germany and Sweden, as well as in half the states in the USA.

The Northern Virginia personal injury lawyer was glad to have raced well despite the cold, wet and raining conditions.  Bike safety lawyer Landau was ringing the bell on his racing bike as he passed other cyclists on the Alabama roads.  At the second hairpin, the bicyclist right in front of him crashed to the pavement, but seemingly avoided serious injury.   After crossing the finish line, Landau was informed that he had finished 10th in the age group and therefore automatically qualified to represent the USA at the World Age Group Triathlon Championships in Beijing, China.  Due to his performance today, Landau will again be a Sprint Triathlon All American and will likely compete at next year’s National Championships.  Upcoming races include the Virginia Triathlon Series Giant Acorn at Lake Anna in Spotsylvania Virginia next Sunday.

As always, Doug Landau welcomes clients, their families and friends who want to watch him “in action,” either at the races or trying cases.  Call (703-796-9555) or e-mail the Landau Law Shop for details and his upcoming schedule or cases and races.

The bike dismount area at this weekend’s National Triathlon Championship was the scene of crashes, “near misses” and equipment going in all directions.  However, race officials did the smart, safe thing – the changed the course for the USAT Sprint National Championships which will be contested at high speed and on wet pavement. The rain and cold can increase the danger by causing (more…)

Doug Landau bikes past Lake Audubon on his way to Glade during the Reston Triathlon

Doug Landau bikes past Lake Audubon and Fairfax County police, fire and medical rescue workers on his way onto Glade Drive during the Reston Triathlon

The victim of the bike crash Sunday at Ridge Heights Road near the Langston Hughes Middle School and South Lakes High School contacted sports injury lawyer Doug Landau this week.  The Loudoun County athlete sustained multiple injuries in the incident and was taken to INOVA Fairfax Hospital by ambulance after being attended to at the accident scene by Good Samaritan and award-winning triathlete Dr. Allen Delaney of Commonwealth Orthopedic Group.

Apparently a car came from a side street during the 26th annual Reston Triathlon and blocked the path of the cyclists heading up toward the High School transition area according to reports in the Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling FABB blog. The injured cyclist was grateful for those who came to his aid and for the speed with which the police and rescuers were on the scene.  Excellent training by Fairfax County first responders and police enabled the injured athlete to be taken to the emergency room quickly.

  • If you know anyone who may have seen any part of this car accident, please e-mail or call us at ABRAMS LANDAU (703-796-9555) at once. We are investigating this bike and car crash, as the cyclist suffered severe injuries, loss of consciousness and closed head injury.

Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau waits as Donna Rostant announces his Reston Triathlon finishing time, place and Award

When injured cyclists recover and return to training, it makes the athletes’ lawyer Doug Landau very happy.  When disabled clients are able to go back to competing, it is heartwarming.  And, as happened today, they win awards, it is incredible.  Several clients who had been struck by motorists while riding their bicycles, and who had sustained head injuries, orthopedic injuries and been disabled, won age group awards at the Reston Triathlon.  In fact, several ABRAMS LANDAU clients finished ahead of sports injury lawyer Landau, even though he also won an age group award !

Such success at the races matches the success the Landau Law Shop has seen with these cases.  Our goal is to keep winning awards for our injured client’s cases and at all races.  If you, or someone you know, has been injured while biking, running, walking or while engaging in some other recreational or sporting activity, e-mail or call us at ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd. Our experience helping injured athletes who have been in car crashes, or hurt by defective sports products or in accidents due to dangerous conditions may be used to help you.

Bike helmet safety inspection at the Reston Triathlon

Reston Triathlon bike helmet safety inspection

Bicyclists participating in the Reston Triathlon must have their helmets inspected for cracks, breaks, missing straps and other unsafe conditions.  Once the biker’s helmet passes inspection, the triathlete can compete in this popular annual endurance sporting event.  All of the participants have been registered for months.

However, one bicyclist whose helmet failed inspection, approached registration volunteer Doug Landau and asked him to get a sticker from the inspectors so that he could ride with a cracked helmet !  Sports injury and bike crash lawyer Landau explained that he had several broken helmets already at the Landau Law Shop, and that the other volunteers were right to reject the unsafe head protection.  Proper fitting bike helmets can prevent or reduce brain injury, head trauma and TBI.  The registrant still protested, and so Landau promised to bring a USAT approved helmet to the race for him to wear at the Triathlon the next day.  ABRAMS LANDAU attorney Doug Landau often brings extra swim goggles, bicycle wheels and helmets to Triathlons and Duathlons, as he has also been in situations where he has needed to borrow necessary sports equipment and bike components from other racers.

Having served as a “bouncer” at Herndon “Friday Night Live” Rock Concerts, Doug Landau has been a volunteer and checked legal identification on behalf of non-profit groups.  Triathletes lined up at Reston’s South Lakes High School to check in for the Annual Reston Triathlon.  In addition to racing Sunday, Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau again served as a volunteer, checking registrants in, answering questions of new multisport athletes, marking and clearing the run course of debris.  Landau knows many of the volunteers, spectators and participants.  The pre-race safety meetings, course reviews, bike helmet inspections helped increase the safety of the event and will hopefully prevent needless sports injury, accidents and head trauma.  The wonderful Reston Triathlon Association members, mini expo and volunteers made for a fun reunion for the athletes lawyer.

Leesburg Loudoun and Fairfax County bike crash lawyer Doug Landau on the far right, next to the aptly dressed groom

Leesburg Loudoun and Fairfax County bike crash lawyer Doug Landau on the far right, next to the aptly dressed groom, after a fast pre-wedding ride

While Labor Day is usually a day of rest and relaxation, Triathlon Trial lawyer Doug Landau travelled to upstate New York for a family wedding and lead a bike ride for the groom and his friends.  The multi-sport attorney was asked by the bride if he wold perform this “labor of love” for her as she was to run with the ladies from the wedding party, and she wanted her fiance to return in one piece !  No crazy races, dog bites, speeding tickets, bike crashes or other sports injuries were to be allowed.

Having previously ridden with this very strong cyclist, and even knocked him off his bike (accidentally) after coming of of the W&OD Trail in Loudoun County outside of Leesburg, Landau knew that he would have his hands full keeping up with the young English bikers.  By drafting, catching up during rest and directions breaks, and then making a “breakaway” when the well-mannered British bicyclists stopped for a truck, the Herndon bike lawyer was able to finish with the “polite peloton” after nearly two hours of very fast pedaling !  The wedding that night was wonderful, and the Landaus returned to Virginia the next day, exhausted and relaxed (if that’s not an oxymoron !), and ready for the start of another school year and Fall season.

The scene during this morning's rush hour bike crash in Oak Hill, Virginia

The scene as I left Oakton Woods during this morning's Fairfax rush hour bike crash between Reston Parkway and the Fairfax County Parkway in Oak Hill, Virginia

Having seen and assisted at more car, truck and bike crashes than I can recount, I was nevertheless shaken this morning by the scene outside my neighborhood.  A biker had apparently been hit by a car and badly injured at West Ox Road and Ashburton in the Herndon – Oakton Woods area of Fairfax County, in Northern Virginia.  Emergency Medical responders and Fire and Rescue teams were dispatched quickly and several motorists had already stopped to render assistance to the fallen cyclist as he lay on the pavement between the two corners of Ashburton, across from Franklin Oaks Drive.

Before loading the injured cyclist into the ambulance, Fairfax County EMTs assess, secure and prepare to transport the injured biker this morning after an apparent crash at West Ox Road and Ashburton Avenue across from Franklin Oaks Drive

The EMTs and ambulance came to the scene of this rush hour bike crash and immediately set about to assess and then treat the injured athlete.  This car and bicycle crash occurred between Oak Farms Drive and the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100), about exits North of Fair Oaks Hospital.  The injured cyclist was being loaded onto a stretcher and had been placed in a neck brace to protect his neck from spinal cord damage as we were allowed to pass.  It brought home the fact that bike crashes can happen around the corner as well as far away on the trails, tours and race courses.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured cyclist and his family, and we hope that he gets appropriate medical care and recovers quickly.

If you or someone you know has been injured as the result of a bike crash, car accident or sports injury, please contact us by e-mail at ABRAMS LANDAU or call (703)-796-9555.

Broadlands Sprint Triathlon participants before the start of the race

Broadlands Sprint Triathlon participants before the start of the race

At the Broadlands Sprint Triathlon today in Loudoun County, some 270 multisport athletes took to the streets.  Leesburg, Fairfax and Prince William bike injury lawyer Doug Landau wanted to try this TriPerformance event to test his early summer fitness.  Landau also likes competing in safe events like this, where the directors and volunteers take great pains to avoid accidents, crashes and injury.  The pre-race meetings and course previews are especially appreciated by the seasoned “Triathlon Trial Lawyer.”  In the transition area he discussed strategy with Alexandria General District Court Judge Moore, not for trials, but for triathlons !

The Broadlands Sprint Triathlon started with a 400 meter pool swim, followed by a slightly shorter than the advertised 12 mile bike ride, and ended with a curvy 5km.  The Loudoun, Prince William and Fairfax County bike crash injury lawyer finished in the top 10, and was the first grand master, master and age group.  Today’s race raises funds for the Infinitive Foundation, which was established to support programs focused on health and enhancing family life. Proceeds from the Infinitive Race Series will support local and US Military families.
