Having represented someone who suffered from Hepatitis C after getting tattoos, the following story about a self-proclaimed Neo-Nazi who is getting his prison tattoos covered up by a makeup artist during his trial caught Herndon personal injury lawyer Doug Landau’s eye. While everyone at ABRAMS LANDAU agrees an accused deserves a fair trial and representation if they cannot affords a lawyer, getting the taxpayers to pay for a make up artist or cosmetologist seems a bit over the top. If a defendant in a criminal trial can get this service, what’s next ? A make up artist for a assailant whose face is bruised ? Cover up for a cauliflower-eared rapist ? How about Retin-A for child molesters to look younger ? In this case the offending swastika tattoos and barbed wire across his face were done AFTER the accused was arrested and in prison. The Defendant knew that he would be appearing before a judge, perhaps a jury and others who might be offended by what he did to his appearance while in prison.

Tragedy doesn’t discriminate against fame, as NFL receiver Chris Henry’s family and friends learned after the 26 year old fell from the back of a truck and his wounds proved fatal.  At ABRAMS LANDAU we have helped accident victims who have fallen or been ejected from moving vehicles in their negligence cases.  In one case a woman was ejected from the sun roof of her sports car when it rolled at high speed.  While she survived her ejection injuries, Herndon car crash lawyer Doug Landau notes that she was lucky, as the roof was completely crushed after the vehicle finished rolling.  Sometimes smaller clients can slip under a safety belt or come over the back and headrest, with predictably tragic results.

This sad story shows that even the most physically fit people cannot withstand a sudden accident in a moving vehicle. Always use the proper restraints when driving or riding in a car, and please, never ride in the bed of a truck.

The Trial Lawyers Association of Washington, D.C. (“TLA-DC”), along with United States Congressman Bruce Braley and American Association for Justice (”AAJ”) Senior Vice President for Public Affairs Linda Lipsen held a silent auction at the annual holiday party, hosted by the DC Trial Lawyers Foundation.  All proceeds from the sale of the Auction Items will be used to buy holiday toys for DC Kids.  The top trial lawyers from our Nation’s Capitol were in attendance, and singers from Georgetown Visitation School provided holiday music at the University Club.

Dulles area injury lawyer Doug Landau, who had not attended a DC trial lawyers meeting in some time, welcomed the opportunity to network and compare strategies with many Washington, D.C. lawyers that he knows and has worked with on permanent disability and fatal accident cases in the DC metro area.   Lawyer Landau routinely goes into the District of Columbia to try Workers Comp, Social Security and Personal Injury cases on behalf of disabled ABRAMS LANDAU clients.  Shown here with Trial Lawyers Association  – Metropolitan DC Executive Director Mary Zambri, Landau hopes to attend future DC Trial Lawyer events in 2010.

Virginia State Police report 13 people died in traffic crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday. Preliminary totals showed they were killed in 13 crashes during the five-day counting period. That’s up from 12 deaths during that time last year. State police said four of the 13 killed were not wearing seat belts. Alcohol was a factor in at least four of the crashes. As a lawyer who represents innocent victims injured and killed by drunk and impaired drivers, Herndon Reston injury lawyer Doug Landau finds this trend disturbing.

In addition, 3 of those killed were pedestrians. ABRAMS LANDAU, represents injured pedestrians and those struck by cars, trucks and motorcycles. Pedestrian and injured car crash victims lawyer Doug Landau notes that such somber statistics are unacceptable. One of the fatalities was a motorcyclist. Motorcyclists often sustain fatal injuries in a crash with a car, truck or bus. During the holiday period the AP reported state police cited more than 10,400 drivers for speeding, 2,600 for reckless driving and more than 130 for driving under the influence. The Thanksgiving holiday period began Wednesday and ran through Sunday.

Leesburg, Prince William, Fairfax and Loudoun County lawyer Landau has successfully brought civil personal injury cases against drivers convicted of reckless driving, exceeding the speed limit and DUI, DWI and driving while impaired by drugs as well as alcohol. This report of over two dozen arrests per day for the Commonwealth of Virginia suggests that there is significant danger on our roads. Landau notes that this unacceptably high incidence of driving under the influence suggests that the criminal penalties are not sufficient to reduce the incidence of drinking and driving and that the civil penalties should be augmented in order to drive the point home that drinking and driving is a crime, it is dangerous and you may lose your license, your freedom and your property. After four metro drivers have been injured in train accidents since June, it appears that greater safety training is needed by DC Metro. Union officials have also called for more safety training for new and existing subway train operators. Having tried cases where the employer tries to rely on the injured workers’ signatures on a safety book, DC workplace accident lawyer Doug Landau knows firsthand that there must be actual, “hands on” safety training, and that such safety training must continue throughout a train, bus or Metro driver’s career. Personal injury lawyer Landau notes that the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the spate of accidents on the DC Metrorail system. Because these “common carriers” are subject to special rules and responsibilities when passengers are injured, the ABRAMS LANDAU trial attorney calls upon the District of Columbia Government to step up its safety training and accident prevention procedures.
