Robert Harris Sr., a retired Richmond Circuit judge who now mediates for The McCammon Group and who is approaching the $1 billion mark in the total value of settlements he has handled, is shown here with Herndon-Reston area injury lawyer Doug Landau at the VTLA Annual Convention at The Homestead. Like ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd., The McCammon Group is a sponsor of the 49th Annual Convention. The Hon. Robert Harris, Sr. (Richmond Circuit Court, retired) has been a mediator in some of the most serious injury cases in Virginia, including one of Mr. Landau’s head trauma and brain injury cases. That Fairfax County car crash case was mediated in Richmond and resulted in a settlement for Mr. Landau’s young client in excess of $2,000,000.00. Judge Harris wrote in the Spring 1998 edition of the Journal of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association: Over the past few years, mediation as a means of resolving disputes has grown exponentially in Virginia. Since my retirement as a circuit court judge in June 1995, I have personally mediated more than 400 cases across the Commonwealth, with 90 percent of those cases settled. I predict (more…)

The Herndon injury law firm of ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd. is not only a Convention Sponsor for the Continuing Legal Education (”CLE”), Convention Committe member and frequent Moderator, but Doug Landau also directs and sponsors the Annual Tennis Tournament. Having been a tennis instructor prior to law school, TheAthletesLawyer enjoys including young and old in this fun event. Shown here are the happy participants who did not freeze like the early morning runners ! Prior to the start of the afternoon tournament, Landau and his wife and oldest daughter ran in the cross country race in 30 degree weather ! Continuing his father, Norman Landau’s tradition of athletic participation and success, Doug’s middle daughter participated in horse back riding and skeet shooting. After she competed in the Skeet Shooting Competition, she hopped a bus to get to the Courts on time (”like daughter like father !”). Mrs. Landau kept track of the scoring, just as she keeps tract of the trust accounting at the Landau Law Shop. The TriathlonTrialLawyer managed to win the running competition, but the level of tennis was very high, and he ended up as the third place male. He is shown below with the Male Tennis Winner, Boyd Collier, Jr., of Richmond, on his right, and runner-up, Neil Shulwolf, who like Landau, is a University Of Miami (FL) Law School graduate. On the women’s side, Beverly Mason won the most games, male or female, and the runner up was none other than Doug Landau’s daughter, who is a junior in High School, where she plays on the Madeira Varsity Tennis and Soccer teams. And yes, Doug’s daughter won more games than he did, and will not likely let TheAthletesLawyer forget it anytime soon !

The Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA) 49th Annual Convention was not all lectures, Continuing Legal Education (”CLE”) programs and Committee meetings. There were also several sporting competitions over this past weekend. The first event is the early morning Run and then in the afternoon, after the CLE program, attorneys from all over the Commonwealth can compete in: Skeet Shooting, vie for the “Norman Landau Cup” Golf Tournament, or play in the tennis tournament sponsored by ABRAMS, LANDAU Ltd. . .
. Doug Landau was a volunteer at last year’s race, which has traditionally been sponsored by the Garver Law Office in Reston. TriathlonTrialLawyer Landau of Herndon sometimes trains with running race sponsor Steve Garver and has been the director of the tennis tournament for over a decade. In prior years, the “TriathlonTrialLawyer” was runner up to 4:17 miler Davis Barry, who is senior in high school this year, and the son of the Allen firm’s managing partner Doug Barry or Fredericksburg. However, with the younger Barry out injured, TheAthletesLawyer was able to hold off 2 challengers, whose combined age was still less than half of Landau’s ! While the lead changed several times in the opening miles, and Landau took several wrong turns on the hilly, cross country course, he managed to come in first place and then run back to escort his wife and daughter to the finish line ! He is shown here with Tom Curcio of Old Town, Alexandria and Chris Meyer, of the Allen firm’s Richmond office. Over the years, Landau has run with these lawyers, and worked on cases with them as well.

Herndon-Reston Virginia injury lawyer Doug Landau and two dozen other experienced disability lawyers attended a special presentation by Commissioner William Dudley, Jr. today. The Commissioner is one of only 3 Full Commissioners at the Virginia Workers Compensation Commission (”VWC”) headquarters in Richmond. While he has over two decades of experience trying cases on behalf of injured workers and their families, Doug Landau attends these programs in order to stay abreast of current developments, and learn about the latest cases, rulings and trends.
The Abrams Landau, Ltd. trial lawyer has presented appeals before the Full Commission panel, upon which Commissioner Dudley sits. This presentation by the learned judge was part of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA) 49th Annual Convention and Continuing Legal Education (”CLE”) program. Doug Landau is a member of both the Workers Comp AND the Social Security Disability Law Sections of VTLA and the American Association for Justice (which is the National Trial Lawyers Association). Commissioner Dudley covered such topics as: Assault & Battery, streamlining Workers Comp procedures, comp rate, presumptions in brain injury and head injury cases, overtime, disease and disability, injured Virginia Workers rights, remedies and medical care. ABRAMS LANDAU trial lawyer Doug Landau is shown here with Commissioner Dudley, and on his left, preeminent insurance defense attorney Ben Trichilo, of Fairfax, Virginia.

On Thursday, March 13, 2008, Reston-Herndon, Virginia lawyer Doug Landau presented the tragic case of a motor cycle passenger who was struck by a motorist while traveling with friends. This 36-year-old woman was wearing her helmut, yet suffered traumatic brain injury (”TBI”) which has left her permanently disabled and in need of constant care. This ABRAMS LANDAU client was taken by helicopter to the INOVA Fairfax Hospital ICU, where she was kept on life support. Cycle injury lawyer Landau visited his client at the hospital and observed that she had orthopedic injuries as well. The cyclist had fractures in her leg and had multiple acute, traumatic injuries about her head, body and extremities. Doug Landau also visited her doctors and home.
Before this devastating cycle-car crash that resulted in her permanent brain damage, Doug Landau’s client had been accustomed to riding all over the world by bicycle and motorcycle. She was an executive with an international computer company. More importantly, she was a wife, a mother and a daughter. Now, as the result of her head and brain injuries, she is being cared for by her aged parents and her son is being raised in another country by his father’s family.
In his closing argument to the Federal Court, Doug Landau recited all the losses caused by the defendant driver’s negligence. In describing what had been taken from his client, Landau discussed his interactions with this brain damaged woman, her doctors, husband and family members. Not one to throw large numbers around lightly, the Herndon Reston brain injury trial lawyer asked the Court for an amount in excess of $20,000,000.00 to fix what has been broken, replace what has been taken and care for a woman who can no longer care for herself. ABRAMS LANDAU cycle crash and TBI lawyer Doug Landau is shown here with Reston accident attorney Steve Garver, who was counsel for the driver of the motorcycle. Mr. Garver’s client has also sustained permanent brain damage and is permanently disabled.

With the coming of warmer weather and longer days, Fairfax County bike crash lawyer Doug Landau got a pre-season check-up, for his bicycle ! Before the start of the Spring racing season, the Triathlon Trial Lawyer took his ride to Rob and Sarah Velasquez at A-1 Cycling at the Herndon Clock Tower Shopping Center on Centreville Road, just South of the Dulles Toll Road and about two miles from the Landau Law Shop. A-1 Cycling also has a store in Manassas at 7700 Sudley Road. Go to TheAthletesLawyer and click on the “PLACES” section for more information on these friendly, skilled and well-stocked stores. .Just as important as making sure your body is ready for intense training and racing, is ensuring that you have a safe ride. Experienced bicycle repair shops, like experienced trial lawyers, know what to look for and usually have several strategies for each problem that arises. One of the ways Landau has avoided head injury and disabling bike crashes is by letting the experts repair and maintain his bicycles before, during and after the racing season. The Herndon/Reston bicycle accident lawyer is shown here with Sarah Velasquez of A-1. The always friendly staff has given great service and the experts at A-1 Cycling have even seen the Triathlon Trial Lawyer competing in the Reston Sprint Triathlon. If you can find a bike shop and mechanics who are experienced, talented and honest, then you will have greater peace of mind, safety and success. These are the same qualities one should seek out when selecting a trial lawyer for a personal injury, automobile accident, dog bite, animal attack, head trauma, defective product, disability claim or bike crash case.

Following on the March 23, 2008 posting (below) showing the 3-Wheeled Safety vehicles at Virginia Tech, Doug Landau is shown here with an unusual 5-wheeled vehicle. The Triathlon Trial Lawyer was touring the Orcas Islands off the coast of Seattle Washington when he came across this odd little vehicle. Does anyone know what this is called ? How many miles to the gallon does it get ? It does not appear to be a dune buggy. This strange craft looks untippable, and would make for a cool looking race lead vehicle. This picture also reminds us that we all need to “share the road” with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 18 wheeled vehicles. Keep your eyes and ears open and ride safely.

This week’s mail including congratulations to Douglas Landau “on being recognized by Washington DC Super Lawyers as one of the Top Attorneys In The Washington D.C. Metro Area!” However, it is our service to our injured clients that really matters. Assisting injured victims and the families of those who have died in accidents for three generations, ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd. appreciates the accolades that have been bestowed upon us. However, it is the comments from clients who we have “served” successfully, that really make our trial team’s day at the Landau Law Shop. Our client’s comments are always welcome. We want to know how we can help people, so constructive criticism and suggestions are taken seriously. Shown here is Doug Landau once again serving the “traditional” 7-course Thanksgiving lunch at a Fairfax County Public School. Just as with his work at ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd., Landau had to work quickly and efficiently at the Crossfield Elementary School and keep his wits about him under extreme conditions. These experiences have also taught Landau how very hard it is to be a School Cafeteria worker and still keep your wits and sense of humor. It also helps that Landau likes the food !

While on the Virginia Tech campus to meet with past and present car crash, pedestrian knock down, workers compensation, premises liability (slip and fall) and injured athlete clients, Herndon/Reston area lawyer Doug Landau came across some very odd looking Police patrol vehicles. The TriathlonTrialLawyer met the Virginia Tech “Tricycle Police.” These stable vehicles enable the TechSecurity force to cover more ground than they could on foot, and have the added advantage of a higher sight line and not having to carry heavy equipment on their belts or backs. Fairfax County personal injury lawyer Doug Landau has successfully represented police officers and fire fighters who have been injured while running on the job. (more…)

On his way to visit with past and present clients at Virginia Tech, Doug Landau and his family stopped in Lexington early Saturday morning. Getting up at 5 AM (!) enabled the Landaus to take part in the Washington & Lee Law School’s annual “Run From The Law” 10km. fundraiser. This cross country running race through the campuses of Washington & Lee and VMI raises money for PILSA. PILSA is the “Public Interest Law Student Association.” Triathlon Trial Lawyer Doug Landau managed to finish 3rd overall on a course that went down to the river and then was mostly uphill the last 2 miles ! After the race, the Landaus piled back into the minivan and drove to see the Hokies in Blacksburg, Virginia ! Shown above are Herndon/Reston area injury lawyer Doug Landau and his freezing cold wife at “The Ruins” of the original Washington & Lee school building before the start of the race.
